Child Virgin praying
This work by Francisco de Zurbarán must have been painted around 1660, and repeats in its composition and theme, another painting that is preserved in the Hermitage Museum and from which it differs essentially, in the approach, the face, and the drawing of the embroidery of the neck. The child Virgin, wearing a red tunic and blue cloak, is seated on a low chair sewing on a green cushion; the artist captures the moment when she stops her work to raise her eyes to heaven to pray. This work was restored at the Prado Museum in 1988. The X-rays that were taken revealed a slight modification in the position of the eyes, which the painter had projected less elevated. /
