Christ on the cross

Luis BORRASSÁ
Temple sobre tabla

This painting is framed by an architectural background of Gothic lobed arches, carved on the panel itself. It depicts Christ crucified with St. John and Mary. The background is gilded and engraved, imitating the texture of a floral tapestry. The ancient attribution to Borrassá, which could be justified by the figure of the Crucified -very close to others by the painter- has recently been questioned by some scholars who, based on the compositional arrangement and the types of Mary and St. John, believe it to be an Italian work. This piece was a central part of an altarpiece, as can be seen from the organization of the bulk of the panel. It was a gift from Mr. José Weisbérger to Mr. Manuel Gómez-Moreno Martínez. / Extracted from: A.A.V.V.: Instituto Gómez-Moreno (catalog). Granada, 1992, p. 113.
