Judgment of Paris

Enamel on copper, in which a mythological theme is developed, “The Judgment of Paris”. On a landscape background with trees, “IVNON”, “VENUS” and “MINERVE” accompanied by the peacock, “AMOUR”, and helmet and shield”, respectively, are presented to “PARIS” to whom they give the golden apple. Next to Paris a dog and, next to him, seated, “MERCVRE” with winged petasus. Flying “FLORE” with palm and laurel wreath in her hand, ready to crown the winner. On the right, the sea with “BIBLIS” and CAVNVS” seated and, in the air, “BORÉE” leads “IVPITER” with eagle and thunderbolt between “DIANE” and “HÉBÉ”. It appears signed at the foot of the figure of Paris “L-L”, and above the two letters the fleur-de-lis. Because of its importance and exquisite technique, it can be considered a royal commission, probably for Henry II of France. / Extracted from: A.A.V.V.: Instituto Gómez-Moreno (catalog).
