Macehualli (Man of the people)

Basalto

The figure, nude, appears seated, highlighting the large central knot of the maxtlatl. Interesting is the plastic solution given to the hunched back, with the vertebrae insinuated. It has holes in the ears to hang earmuffs that would be of some precious material; it would also have false eyes whose holes remain. / Extracted from: A.A.V.V.: Gómez-Moreno Institute (catalog), Granada, 1992.

Chronology: Aztec-Mexican art, 15th century or early 16th century
Dimensions: 25.5 cm
