Miracle of Santo Domingo in Soriano
A pious legend assures that on September 15, 1530 three ladies appeared to a Dominican friar in the church of his congregation in Soriano (Calabria, Italy), showing him the true image of the founder, St. Dominic of Guzman. The ladies were later identified as the Virgin and Saints Mary Magdalene and Catherine of Alexandria, protectors of the Order. As is usual in the representation of this scene, the event takes place inside a religious building, probably a church. There are visible signs of repentance in the composition. The artist starts from a previous idea that he modified on the canvas. They are very palpable in the figure of the friar, whose general outline varied, especially in the position of the hands. The technical and stylistic characteristics of this piece, makes it linkable to the last stage of creation of the artist from Granada.
